He got his degree in aeronautical designing from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1958. He joined India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to deal with an air cushion vehicle venture. Kalam moved to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), where his group effectively propelled a few satellites. He made a huge commitment as Project Director to build up India's first indegenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) which effectively positioned the Rohini satellite into the close to earth circle in July 1980.

Kalam loves children. According to him children are the architects of the future of our country . He wants to ensure that all children have a secure, healthy and happy childhood. His interacts with children on the Internet. Children send e-mails to him with queries and get their replies within 36 hours.
Kalam is fond of gardening too . He has set up two herbal gardens and one 'spiritual garden' in the Bio-diversity Park next to the Mughal Gardens . The spiritual garden is a symbol of peace and unity . The sacred plants of all the religious like Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism, Jainism and Zoroastrianism are planted in the garden . He himself planted the "Trinity" -- a neem, a banyan and a peepal together. To amuse very young children, there is the Bio-diversity Park where a number of animals like deer, tortoise, duck and turkey are kept. He has also got a kitchen garden where vegetables are grown organically .
On 27th July 2015, Kalam travelled to Shillong to deliver a speech at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong. Only five minutes later into his lecture, he collapsed on the stage. He was rushed to the nearby Bethany Hospital in a critical condition. Kalam was affirmed dead of an unexpected heart failure at 7:45p.m.
On 30th July 2015 , the previous president was let go at Rameshwaram's Pei Karumbu Ground with full state respects .
